I’m in Glacier National Park hiking with my family for two weeks before my last semester of graduate school begins in late August. In my absence, I’d like to give you a taste of one of my favorite bakeries. (A version of this story originally appeared on Gapers Block.) If you have ever had the opportunity […]

Maryann McDaniel - Just found you blog…jealous you got to go to Glacier. My niece is getting married today in Polson near there and I wish I could have made the trip. I finished my doctorate in May. Good luck to you with graduate school this year. What a sense of accomplishment. You also visited another of my favorite places — New Orleans. I map out the food stops throughout NO every time we go! Thanks for sharing your adventures and the food.

Raw Corn & Cashew Chowder » Pro Bono Baker - […] spent a lovely long weekend in the Bay Area in May and I’m heading on my annual Glacier backpacking trip with my Dad in a few weeks. The summer has been busy with six weddings and various out-of-town […]

Strawberry Shortcake

This has been the first summer that has really felt like summer to me in a long time. Soaring temperatures, breezy bike rides, patio drinking, vacations, great food, old friends, new friends, grad school classes, and barely a moment to sit still – just the way I like it. I’ve been fortunate to spend a […]

Malina - I’m doing a terrible job of making seasonal recipes this summer; too much traveling for business. My daughter has a birthday coming up and I think I should make this. Sounds divine! Lovely family. Cheers! m

Terri - Great side by side of you and your grandfather!

flyer printing - I am excited too when a reunion is coming! Meeting my old folks and my cute nephews, we do some baking and cooking new dishes! I can include this on my list of recipes for this occasions too.

Gemma - Thanks Malina and Terri!
Indeed, flyer printing. It’s always fun to share dishes with family.

Porch Beer

It is sweltering in Illinois as I write this. I glanced at the weather report before I biked to work this morning, and to my dismay saw that it would feel like 112 F outside. And, it did. Look out east coast, this heat wave is coming for you. I’d recommend that you stock a few […]

(And we must be on a similar page … a week or so ago I made up a drink I named “front porch lemonade”)

Beet Ice Cream

It never feels like summer until July, when the midwest gets hit with the first dangerous heat wave and the humidity becomes overwhelming. Everyone likes to complain about it, including me, but I secretly appreciate the extreme temperatures that mark our seasons in this region. When I lived in Oregon, I was always felt a […]

New Orleans

The American Library Association annual conference took place in New Orleans this year. I waited until the last minute to decide to attend, but in late June I joined thousands of other librarians and archivists for a week in a truly lovely city.   It’s no secret that I have a special place in my […]
