Apple and Almond Oatmeal Clafoutis

The Kitchn looked at make-ahead breakfasts this past week, and pointed me toward this recipe at Chocolate & Zucchini for Oatmeal Clafoutis.  I never like to eat too soon after waking up on a weekday morning, so having something quick and portable to throw in my bag saves me time and money.  This is a great recipe to […]

Joanna - Lovely! Good call on not peeling the apples – not really necessary.

Kaitlyn - I saw this recipe on the Kitchn and was intrigued especially with the description as “oatmeal flan.” Seeing it here makes me want to try it even more!

kickpleat - I’ve tried something very similar but I love calling it a clafoutis…so much more exotic sounding than baked oatmeal with eggs!

Gemma - Thanks Joanna. Yeah, I figured I’d give it a try without peeling. I ended up much preferring it.
Thanks Joelen!
Thank you for pointing me toward it Faith! It is quickly becoming one of my favorites as well.
Hi Kaitlyn, I definitely recommend giving it a try some weekend soon. It is such an easy and hearty dish.
kickpleat – Ha, I completely agree. It really classes it up.

Susan - Do you think all the sugar the recipe calls for is necessary? It seems like a lot. I wonder if you could get away with less?

gemma - Hi Susan. I didn’t try it with less so I’m not certain, but in my experience sugar is one of those ingredients that you can tamper with a bit before you really damage the integrity of the recipe. Good luck finding the palace you are looking for.
Thank you Dawn!

Pomegranate Rehydration Drink

This week marks a year since I began running. I've come along way from huffing and puffing to get through a mile and a half.  With support from friends, family and even some of you lovely readers, I participated in the AIDS Marathon training program last summer to run the Chicago Half Marathon. This weekend I am […]

Sassy Molassy - Yum yum! Transplanted Baker’s Siri sent me your link. Cheers from one runner to another. I like buying Knudsen juices occasionally as they aren’t all artificial and taste good too! http://www.knudsenjuices.com/products/natural_juices

tbillini - Awesome!
Do you plan to carry it with you during the ChiThon? I have often wanted to train with some of the home-made / natural drinks, but fret at the idea of carrying it with me on race day. Thoughts?
ALSO – I made a honey / nutmeg energy “gel” that is FTW!

Meghan - I’m definitely going to try this! I hate sports drinks, but found Function’s Shock Sports to be essential to my summer running last year.
P.S. Have you noticed how I’ve logged almost ZERO runs in the past two weeks. I think I’m chickening out on the Chicago 13.1!!

Mandy Burrell - Fun post! I didn’t know you were a runner. More things we have in common. I did the ’00 Chicago Marathon, but haven’t run one since. I’m contemplating the September half. Are you signed up for that?

Hi Sassy Molassy- I like Knudsen juices for the same reason. I will definitely be using them in this recipe as the summer running season gets underway. Good luck with your running!
Hi tbillini- I’m not sure about carrying it with me. I carried my own drink during my half marathon last year, but I was considering ditching my water-belt this time around. I’ll have to mull it over as it approaches. That is awesome that you made your own energy gel! I’ll have to try it.
Meghan – I’m getting worried about the 13.1 race too. I don’t know how I am going to find the time to get from 10 miles up to 13 in the next few weeks. I don’t think I want to run in Argentina alone – but maybe it will make sense to once I get there. I hope we both make it!
Hi Mandy, I did the Banco Popular half last year and I am signed up for the new Chicago 13.1 in a few weeks. But I might add another one in if it makes sense with my training. This will be my first full. It feels a bit daunting, but I’m excited.

Gemma - Thanks Joelen!

Marie - Good Luck on the marathon. My son is running in it too, his second time.

Easter Recipes

I'll be spending Easter with my family this weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park at our beautiful local Opera House with my mother, going for a long run on low-traffic rural roads, meeting the new baby my cousin and his wife recently added to the family, and spending […]

Jen C - That tsoureki is my favorite thing ever. I go back and look at the picture in the original post more than I would like to admit. One day, I will have the courage to bake it.

Peter - I’m glad you’ve got the Greek Easter bread. I only hope mine will look as nice as yours.

Kaitlyn - What great recipe ideas! The beet, arugula and goat cheese crostini looks like a great side!

Gemma - That’s sweet Jen. I bet you’d make a stellar loaf!
From the photos I saw, yours looked great Peter. Well done. (Assuming this is the Peter I think it is.)
Thanks Kaitlyn!

Carrot Cupcakes with Maple Frosting

When the sweet, late-spring carrots start arriving at your local market, consider these delicious cupcakes. While any old carrot will do, try finding small, fresh bunches with their greens still attached for a flavorful, seasonal treat.   This recipe was inspired by an older Cook's Illustrated recipe for carrot cake that called for emulsifying the […]

Anali - These look great! Also, it’s maple syrup season, so this is a great way to use maple.

Coal, Crock & Cabinet - Carrot and maple! Fantastic combination. I roast carrots and beets with maple syrup but never thought to use the two in a sweet dish.
Great Job!
Richard

Gemma - Thanks Anali. I agree, carrots with maple is an excellent seasonal spring combination.
Thanks Richard, your comment is making me crave sweet roasted beets!
